However (as from mid-2011) the page is being amended/expanded to include details of a newly-created offshoot (sister) company called "Air Ambulance Recycling Ltd".

Meanwhile, references on this page to "the company" indicate "Air Ambulance Support CIC".

! Beware - don't confuse this company with . . .

Our comments concerning the leaflet shown above:

Their website(s)

Web address on their leaflet (at July 2011)

www.AirAmbulanceSupportCIC.org

At mid-July 2011:

Web address (at November 2010)

http://airambulancesupport.org

Note the website has no "www" in it, and it has an .org (not .org.uk) suffix.

As at November 2010, parts of their site are unfinished.

Much of the English is poor - presumably because the person concerned is from overseas (and English is not his first language).

So far, we haven't found any contact details on the website (apart from a mobile phone number on the FAQ page).  There's no landline number or postal address.
The "Contact Us" page uses a submission form.

Below are verbatim extracts from the homepage of the website (at Nov 2010) :

"About Us

Air Ambulance Support is an Organisation dedicated to fundraise for Air Ambulances across United Kingdom.

. . .

4. Income from clothing export is used to cover the cost of running collections teams and other overheads.  Realised profit is given to Air Ambulances on monthly or quarterly basis.

. . .

However the most important factor restricting other clothing collectors to contribute more is the fact [that the] majority of them are profit seeking limited companies which sole purpose of being in business is not raising funds - but making profit for shareholders.  As a Community Interest Company - our purpose is to reinvest our profits back to the community.  This means that we do not look to achieve any additional profit from the transactions (comparing to other clothing collectors) and can raise on average twice more per Metric Tonne. "

Verbatim extract from the News page of their website :

[entry dated 21 Oct 2010]

"First Collection

Our First collection results:

Air Ambulance Support Team launched trial Operation in West Midlands and is proud to announce that from 4,000 distributed leaflets we collected 653kg of clothing.  You can see more detailed information on Air Ambulances page.

This trial operation was conducted on the small scale to see the reaction of the public and willingness to donate for the cause.  This trial operation reveals that once launched on full capacity we can effectively collect 12 Tonnes - 18 Tonnes per week which is really exciting! "

Regarding the "legitimacy" of the company and its collections, see the intriguing statements on their FAQs page.

Design:  The maroon colour of their website and the use of the yellow heart beat line is very similar to the design of the Midlands Air Ambulance charity website.  This could be seen as misleading.

On their website, the company refers to "Air Ambulance Service" - and criticises them.

The status of the company - a "Community Interest Company" (CIC)

"Community interest companies" (CICs for short) were introduced in 2005.
As at 2010, there are around 4,000 of them in the UK.

For more information on them, see :

Below is a short explanation of CICs - from the homepage of www.cicregulator.gov.uk   :

"Community Interest Companies (CICS) are limited companies, with special additional features, created for the use of people who want to conduct a business or other activity for community benefit, and not purely for private advantage.

This is achieved by a "community interest test" and "asset lock", which ensure that the CIC is established for community purposes and the assets and profits are dedicated to these purposes.

Registration of a company as a CIC has to be approved by the Regulator who also has a continuing monitoring and enforcement role."

History of the company (AASCIC)

8 July 2010
Date of incorporation - as "Air Ambulance Support Ltd".

24 September 2010
Name changed to "Air Ambulance Support Community Interest Company"
(And presumably this was when it changed status from a conventional limited company to a CIC.)

6 October 2010
Launch of their website (according to the news page on their website).

21 October 2010 approx
It carried out the first clothing collections (according to their website).

2011 *
New website launched:  www.AirAmbulanceSupportCIC.org
This was the same name as before, except for the addition of "cic" (and "www").

21 June 2011
Incorporation (ie creation) of "Air Ambulance Recycling Ltd" (AAR).
This company was closely related to AASCIC.

13 July 2011
New director of AASCIC appointed.  Change of address of registered office.  See details above.

Licensing of their clothing collections (under the 1939 Act)

We never found any mention of this on their website (although they did refer to trading standards).

Clearly, their leaflets were "charitable" in terms of the 1939 Act - so they definitely needed licences if they were to comply with the law.

We understand they never applied for any licences (under the House to House Collections Act 1939).

Comments about "Air Ambulance Support" - made by Midlands Air Ambulance charity (MAA)

As at November 2010, the charity had added a page to their website, warning people about two organisations which were carrying out clothing collections, as follows :

The address of the page is :

www.midlandsairambulance.com/ ... warning-clothcolectors.html

The page is headed "Warning - bogus clothing collectors!".

Extract (our thanks to the charity) :

"WARNING - BOGUS CLOTHING COLLECTORS!

Important announcement from Midlands Air Ambulance

BEWARE BOGUS CHARITY COLLECTORS

Midlands Air Ambulance is warning everyone to be on the lookout for organisations doing door to door collections calling themselves Air Ambulance Service (Trading Co) Ltd or Air Ambulance Support Ltd.

Both organisations are limited companies that are visiting homes across the midlands asking for donations of clothing, toys and mobile phones to be recycled which appears, at first hand, to be in aid of Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.

Midlands Air Ambulance wishes to make clear the Charity has absolutely no association with either company.  We have not authorised them to collect goods or raise funds on behalf of the Charity and we receive no funding from them."

[etc; bold above added by CharityBags]

The page includes images of leaflets from both companies (each with the caption "Example of bogus leaflet").

There's also an image of a collection bag from "Air Ambulance Service (Trading Co) Ltd".

Comments about "Air Ambulance Support" - made by other organisations

As at early November 2010, Google reported only a few hits for the "Air Ambulance Support" company (apart from the article by Midlands Air Ambulance charity described above).

(This contrasted with "Air Ambulance Service" - there were dozens of articles on them.  See our page describing some of these articles on "Air Ambulance Service".)
